How to listen to X posts while driving

You cannot read a feed at the wheel. You can listen to one. Here is how to set it up so you never have to look.

· 4 min read

Frequo reads public posts from X aloud, one after another, like a radio station. You pick a channel, press play and keep your eyes on the road. Each clip names the account, then reads the post word for word in a labelled AI voice. Nothing is summarized or rewritten, and every clip links back to the original post on X for later.

Set everything up before you drive. Keep your eyes on the road and follow the local rules on phones in the car. Every control below works without looking at the screen.

Before you leave

Two minutes in the driveway saves you from touching the phone later.

  1. Open frequo.app in your phone's browser. Add it to your Home Screen, so it opens like an app.
  2. Pick a channel. Frequo Mix is a good first listen: Tech, Markets, Sports and World take turns. If you want the accounts you already follow, pick Following.
  3. Open the Tuner and set the speed. It goes from 0.7 to 1.6 times. Slower can be easier to follow when the road needs your attention.
  4. Set the pace between posts: Tight, Relaxed or Spacious. A longer pause makes it easier to tell where one post ends and the next begins.
  5. Choose a segment length. Mix and Following play 10 posts from one channel, then move on. Make it 5 or 20 if you like.
  6. Connect the phone to the car the way you usually play audio, press play and put the phone away or in a mount.

Controls that work on the road

Frequo answers the same buttons as any audio app. The play, pause, next and back buttons on your headset or the lock screen work.

  • Next skips to the next post.
  • Back goes back one post, so you can hear something again.
  • Two quick presses of a headset button within a second count as one, so a bump does not skip two posts.
  • The lock screen shows the account and the channel that are playing.
  • On the phone screen, press skip twice quickly to skip the rest of a segment.

Free has 8 skips a day. When they run out, the radio says "No skips left today." out loud, so you do not have to look to find out why nothing happened. Pro has unlimited skips.

Tunnels, hills and dead zones

Phone signal drops on most drives. Pro includes Drive-ahead buffering for patchy signal. It keeps a stretch of upcoming posts cached on your phone, so the radio rides out a dropped connection. Turn it on in the Tuner before you set off.

Without it, the player shows that it is reconnecting and tries again on its own. You do not need to tap anything.

What it reads, and what it skips

A post is never cut off halfway. If a post is too long to read whole, it is skipped. Links are not read out, other than a plain address like example.com, and pictures and videos are not described. Posts that only make sense with a picture, posts that lead into one ("be like:"), and posts under 6 words are left out, so what you hear stands on its own.

Every post is checked by moderation before a voice reads it. If you hear something that should not be on air, tap Report when you are parked. Frequo skips it at once and a person reviews it.

Long drives

On a long drive a single channel can run out of new posts. When that happens Frequo says you are caught up, plays Frequo Mix, and goes back to your channel when new posts come in. If a phone call or another app interrupts, Frequo picks up where it left off.

An ambient bed can sit quietly under the voice: Warm pad, Night drive or Radio hum.

Phones and cars

In your browser, on a phone or a computer. Nothing to install. On your phone, add it to your Home Screen and it opens like an app.

On iPhone, the voice keeps playing when the screen locks. The ambient bed and the chime between posts stop while it is locked.

Where it works

At launch, Frequo is for the United States only: listening, accounts and Pro. Somewhere else? Join the waitlist and we will email you when it opens where you live.
